Background of the Study
Sibling interactions are a vital component of language socialization in bilingual households. In Kano, Hausa families provide a unique environment where sibling language use significantly influences bilingual proficiency. Siblings often serve as language models, engaging in everyday conversations that blend Hausa with other languages, thereby shaping linguistic development and social communication skills (Abdul, 2023). Research highlights that these interactions can foster an informal learning context where children acquire vocabulary, syntax, and pragmatic language skills through observation and imitation (Ibrahim, 2024). However, the dynamics of sibling language use are complex; factors such as age differences, individual language preferences, and the overall home language environment can either enhance or impede balanced bilingual proficiency (Garba, 2025). As sibling interactions are less structured than formal educational settings, they offer insights into the naturalistic acquisition of language and the challenges of maintaining proficiency in both languages. This study aims to assess how sibling language practices contribute to bilingual development in Hausa households, analyzing patterns of language use, the influence of peer dynamics, and the resulting impact on overall language proficiency.
Statement of the Problem
In Hausa households in Kano, sibling language use plays a crucial role in shaping bilingual proficiency, yet its effects remain underexplored. Variations in language use among siblings can lead to imbalances in bilingual competence, where one language may be favored over the other (Abdul, 2023). Such disparities may result in reduced vocabulary acquisition and fluency, potentially affecting academic performance and social interactions (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the informal nature of sibling interactions makes it challenging to implement structured language learning, often leading to inconsistent language exposure. The study seeks to address these issues by examining the patterns of sibling language use and their direct impact on bilingual proficiency, providing insights for educators and families seeking to foster balanced language development (Garba, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the influence of sibling language interactions on bilingual proficiency.
To examine how sibling dynamics contribute to language development in Hausa households.
To propose strategies for fostering balanced bilingual proficiency through improved sibling communication.
Research Questions:
How does sibling language use affect bilingual proficiency in Hausa households?
What patterns of language interaction exist among siblings?
What interventions can enhance balanced bilingual development through sibling interactions?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the often-overlooked role of sibling interactions in bilingual development. Its findings will offer practical recommendations for parents and educators on leveraging sibling dynamics to promote balanced language proficiency, thereby enhancing overall academic and social outcomes in Hausa households (Abdul, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the role of sibling language use on bilingual proficiency in Hausa households in Kano.
Definitions of Terms:
Sibling language use: The communication and linguistic interactions between siblings.
Bilingual proficiency: The level of competence in two languages.
Hausa households: Families in which Hausa is predominantly spoken.
